I am pleased to announce that East Spring Secondary School has been awarded the Lee Hsien Loong Award for Innovations in the Normal Course (LHL AIN) 2017. With this affirmation, it is with great excitement and enthusiasm that all teachers, parents and students can look forward to embark on the new academic year, 2018, together.
In East Spring Secondary School, every child matters. East Spring Secondary has developed a Holistic Development Programme to meet the needs of its students, which comprises the Holistic Development Character and Citizenship Education (HDCCE) and Teaching and Learning frameworks. These frameworks encapsulates the school’s plans to achieve the desired outcomes of education. To achieve this, we offer a holistic and robust curriculum and co-curriculum designed to empower and prepare our students to live, work and play effectively in the 21st century. This can be accomplished through teacher-led excellence, which spurs our nurturing, synergistic and innovative staff to continue to look forward to many opportunities for professional development and growth, and forge meaningful partnerships with parents and the community.
For example, there are a few key programmes in ESSS which aim at developing East Springians to be future-ready. Our Applied Learning Programme (ALP) focuses on ‘Harnessing Energy for Real Life Applications to Live, Work and Play’. This programme engages students in applying the scientific knowledge and skills learnt about energy in order to enrich their lives, work and play. Alongside that, we hope to also develop critical and inventive thinking in our students and stretch their imagination to overcome problems in daily life. Through our ALP, students will be exposed to technology, engineering and mathematics as well. In addition, students will also enhance their computational thinking skills through a workshop called ‘Code for Fun’, from which they will learn to design and create interactive devices.
Our school’s Learning for Life Programme (LLP) is on Community Youth Leadership, which aims to nurture all students to be Confident Persons and Active Contributors. The leadership training and opportunities provided through Values-in-Action experiences will help our students acquire leadership competencies and soft skills such as perseverance, teamwork and collaboration, which are essential for the globalized world. We believe that it is only when students take ownership of their learning, will they improve and be empowered.
Our school’s Global Thinkers Curriculum aims to nurture East Springians into citizens with a global mind set and outlook, who possess cross-cultural literacy skills. Students are exposed to issues that plague people in the various parts of the world, as well as universal issues such as discrimination and poverty. They also learn about the diverse cultures in the world, and what is unique about each culture and its geographical location. Such learning experiences develop students’ competencies in interacting and working with people from diverse backgrounds, in a globalised and cosmopolitan city like Singapore.
To all staff, students and partners, we look forward to continue our growth as one synergistic East Spring family as we aspire to be recognized as a school of choice in the Tampines neighbourhood that develops ‘Creative learners, Upright Citizens and Global Thinkers’.
