The Mathematics Department of East Spring Secondary offers Mathematics and Additional Mathematics, to its students. Mathematics is taught to all students and Additional Mathematics is offered to capable Upper Secondary students as an elective subject.

DEPARTMENT VISION

Better Teachers, Better Students, Better World.

DEPARTMENT MISSION

1.      To build a firm foundation for Mathematics at lower secondary levels to complement the upper secondary levels through

(i)                instructional programmes that are aimed at consolidation of their concepts and addressing misconceptions,

(ii)              generating students' excitement for Math through experiential learning and/or real life performance based tasks,

(iii)           explicit teaching and training of Self-Directed learning skills in Math to equip students for the 21st Century Skills and Competencies.

2.      To enable upper secondary school students to meet their aspirations in life by entering the tertiary educational courses of choice through a strong foundation of Mathematical excellence in the National Examinations.

3.      To develop teachers who can innovate and grow professionally through training, sharing and mutual collaboration through inter-level coordinator-ship and dialogue sessions.

PROGRAMMES

The Mathematics Department has the following programmes to achieve its abovementioned aims via “Student Engagement” and “Teacher Competencies”:

DIFFERENTIATED SUPPORT AND INSTRUCTION – Banding of Classes

Students who require more assistance, especially from the NA/NT stream, are banded according to their abilities. This strategy offers more guidance to the lower progress learners and stretches and maximises everyone to achieve their best.

TALENT DEVELOPMENT – Sigma Society

Our high ability students are identified, via their summative assessments, and developed in Sigma Society as Alpha members. The Alpha members will be trained to peer-tutor their level mates on selected Saturdays before examinations, where the students who need guidance gather to practise past year examination papers. The Alpha members are given the opportunity to hone their Mathematical skills and develop critical thinking skills for the participation in various competitions.

DIFFERENTIATED STRATEGIES FOR SDL – Ace Learning Packages

Our department aims to nurture self-directed learners who question, reflect, persevere and take responsibilities for their own learning. Students subscribe to an online platform known as AceLearning.com, a portal which offers comprehensive and interactive learning resources for all levels. Students are encouraged to learn self-directedly via the Ace-Learning Packaged crafted by their level teachers.

APPLICATION AND RELEVANCE TO REAL LIFE – Mathlete Packages

Students are able to appreciate the nature and power of Mathematics when they are made to analyse real life scenarios. The real-life scenarios are provided by these Mathelete packages and the latter would develop students’ thinking, reasoning, communication, application and metacognitive skills by applying a systematic mathematical approach to problem solving. These would, in turn, undoubtedly build our students’ confidence and interest in Mathematics.

TEACHER COMPETENCIES – Professional Development

In order for our team of Teachers to be able to work hand in hand with students to ignite their passion for Mathematics and bring about academic excellence, Teachers are regularly developed professionally via Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), Professional Development Sessions (PDs) and Level-based Collaborative Mentoring Support.

NATIONAL EDUCATION - Financial Literacy Program

Students in all levels will be equipped with the knowledge of Financial Literacy through National Education lessons in Mathematics. Students at different levels will learn everyday financial issues ranging from the purchase of a HDB flat, investing in their CPF and taxation.
